During th final days of the Vietnam war, three soldiers were ordered to rob the Bank of Hanoi. However, the man who ordered them was killed and noone else can verify their story. They would be tried and found guilty but after that they escape from the facility where they were being held and went underground in Los Angeles. They then established themselves as Soldiers of Fortune known as The A Team. Their leader is Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith who is a master of disguises and has a penchant for danger, who works as an actor, who takes on roles that require him to wear either heavy make up or a costume. B.A.(Bad Attitude) Baracas has a penchant for striking anyone who rubs him the wrong way and is so afraid to fly that they have to drug to get him on a plane and is also a mechanical genius, and Templeton "Face Man" Peck, who is so good looking that he can charm anyone into giving them what they need. Amy Allen, a reporter, who hired them, convinced them to let her join them. Amy would be written out and she be replaced by Tawnia Baker, who would leave at the start of the third season. H.M. (Howling Mad) Murdock flew for them when they were in Vietnam but was not with them when they robbed the bank, who is so shell shocked by the war that he is confined to a V.A. psychiatric hospital, and Face has to come up with all sorts of excuses to get him released so that he could fly for them. Initially, they were being hunted down by Colonel Lynch, whose facility they broke out of, he would later be replaced by Colonel Decker, who is more aggressive. A few years later, Decker would be replaced by General Fullbright. Eventually the team would be caught by a man named Stockwell, who runs a covert spy network, and who promised them a pardon if they join his team and carry out some (dangerous) missions. Frankie Santana, a special effects man who worked with Hannibal in the movies also joined them after helping them.

Con il sigaro sempre in bocca, il colonnello John “Hannibal” Smith (George Peppard) è a capo di un manipolo di ex veterani del Vietnam che ha deciso di mettere la propria esperienza al servizio della giustizia e di combattere i soprusi della società dopo essere stati imprigionati ingiustamente con l’accusa di aver rapinato la Banca di Hanoi quattro giorni dopo la fine della guerra e di aver intascato un bottino di un milione di yen; per questo motivo sono ricercati dapprima dal colonnello Lynch (William Lucking) e poi dal colonnello Roderick Decker (Lance LeGault). Con il taglio esasperato di un fumetto, con i protagonisti che più che reduci assomigliano agli X-Men, la serie pone in risalto, al di là dell’indimenticabile protagonista di Colazione da Tiffany, la figura cartoon di Mr. T nei panni di Barracus detto “Pessimo elemento” (in originale “Bad attitude”), una vera e propria forza della natura in grado di costruire qualsiasi arma o mezzo da guerra dal nulla (indimenticabile la puntata in cui trasforma uno scuolabus in un tank inarrestabile); l’attore riscosse una popolarità tale da farlo salire sul ring contro StalloneRocky III e da creare un cartone animato a sua immagine e somiglianza (fra i tratti caratteristici, questa sorta di Hulk moderno sfoggia una collana d’oro di 35 libbre). Ad affiancare i due comprimari: Dirk Benedict è Templeton Peck, un impostore di dichiarata fama soprannominato “sberla” (“faceman” in originale); Dwight Schultz è l’abile e pazzo pilota Murdock, capace di passare con nonchalance dalla cloche di un caccia a quella di un 747; Robert Vaughn impersona il generale Stockwell, colui che riesce a catturare il gruppo e farlo diventare una testa di ponte dei servizi segreti. Nonostante le esplosioni e gli scontri a ripetizione, nessuno dei protagonisti o degli avversari subisce il benché minimo graffio (in una scena emblematica, due macchine incocciano in un frontale ad altissima velocità: poco dopo i loro occupanti escono dalle lamiere più sani di prima). Nell’ultima stagione, il team arruola il mago degli effetti speciali Frankie Sanchez (Eddie Velez). I creatori e produttori della serie sono la premiata ditta Stephen J. CannellFrank Lupo. La coppia formata da Mike Post e Pete Carpenter firma le musiche. Tra le guest-stars si riconoscono Dennis Franz, Paul Gleason, Tia Carrere e, nei panni di sé stessi, il cantante Boy George e il wrestler Hulk Hogan.
