Vienna and the Shadow of The Third Man 02-05-2009

Sixty years on from the release of The Third Man, tour guide Dr Brigitte Timmermann uncovers Graham Greene's Vienna and takes us in the footsteps of his film.

Walking through the city, she tells the stories that have fascinated generations of film buffs, from Soviet master spy Kim Philby's role in the film to tales of Sir Carol Reed and Graham Greene's late night visits to Vienna's seediest bars.

With the help of fellow devotees, Brigitte explores Vienna's hidden history and examines why The Third Man has remained largely unpopular in the place which inspired it.

From The Radio Times

Film director Carol Reed loved Vienna and its architecture, so when he finished shooting The Third Man in 1948, he donated his arc lights to the city to be used for the grand reopening of the newly-restored St Stephen's Cathedral. But the feeling wasn't mutual. The Austrians never took to Reed's elegytotheir war-torn city and if you want to know why, you can take Vienna's fact-filled Third Man tour led by academic Dr Brigitte Timmermann. Here, Brigitte and fellow Third Man obsessive Gerhard Strassgschwandtner discuss why the film that made Vienna appear so dangerously seductive to British audiences was an uncomfortable reminder to the Austrians of a war they wanted to forget. And why zither player Anton Karas left the British premiere in despair.
