Koenig Hrothgar von Daenemark (A. Hopkins) und sein Volk werden von Grendel (C. Glover), einem furchterregendem Monstrum, terrorisiert. Beowulf (R. Winstone),ein kuehner Recke vom Volk der Geatas, stellt sich mit seinen daenischen Kaempfern dem Monstrum und es gelingt ihnen, Grendel zu toeten. Die Tat erzuernt jedoch seine Mutter auf das aeusserste und sie schwoert Rache an Beowulf. Beowulf gelingt es zunaechst jedoch nicht, Grendels Mutter zu toeten - er erliegt ihren Verfuehrungskuensten und zeugt mit ihr gar einen Sohn...
