Jericho, eine Kleinstadt in Kansas aus der man gerne wegzieht: Der junge Jake Green (Skeet Ulrich) kehrt nach fünf Jahren in seine Heimatstadt zurück. Seine Rückkehr wird zum Horrortrip: Im nahegelegenen Denver detoniert eine Atombombe. Jericho ist komplett von der Außenwelt abgeschottet: Kein Strom, kein Wasser, keine Vorräte. Niemand weiß, wie schlimm das Ausmaß wirklich ist.
Nur Robert Hawkins, ein Ex-Polizist (Lennie James), der erst kürzlich mit seiner Familie nach Jericho gezogen ist, hat auf mysteriöse Art und Weise noch einen funktionsfähigen Computer und diverse technische Ausrüstung, mit denen er heimlich mit Anderen außerhalb des Ortes kommuniziert. Was weiß er über die Explosionen? Ist er vielleicht Teil einer Verschwörung?
