Although Elmo Hope was one of the more interesting jazz composers of the 1950s, the emphasis on his trio set with bassist John Ore and drummer Willie Jones is on Hope's piano playing.  Influenced greatly by Bud Powell (his contemporary), Hope performs standards ( such as "All the Things You Are" and "Falling in Love with Love" ) along with some originals, most of which are based on the chord changes of earlier songs.  Fans of bop piano and Bud Powell will want this enjoyable CD reissue. ~ Allmusic.com





This 1955 recording by Elmo Hope should serve as a great introduction to this great pianist's playing.  Joining Hope are bassist John Ore and drummer Willie Jones.  Hope really turns in a swinging session. Like many pianists around this time, you can hear traces of Bud Powell in his lines, but I want to make something very clear Hope was always his own man as was other Powell-influenced pianists Barry Harris, Tommy Flanagan, and Hampton Hawes.  I think something that really set Hope apart later on was his composing, especially for a larger format like quintet or sextet.  To hear some of his great composing and arranging check out his album "Homecoming." ~ Early Hope
