Tale serie racconta la vita di Sarah Connor e di suo figlio John a partire dal 1999, quando la donna, protagonista femminile dei primi due episodi del ciclo di Terminator, si ritrova ad avere su di sé tutta la responsabilità dell'educazione del figlio adolescente, consapevole del fatto che in futuro avrà il ruolo di leader della resistenza umana.

Questa serie si concentra sugli eventi successivi al secondo film, Terminator 2: Il giorno del giudizio, e grazie ad un paradosso temporale verificatosi nell'episodio pilota, gli eventi narrati nel terzo, Terminator 3: Le macchine ribelli, verranno ignorati in quanto avvenuti in una "linea temporale alternativa".

È stato anticipato che il quarto film del ciclo, Terminator Salvation (il cui inizio delle riprese è previsto per aprile 2008), conterrà numerosi riferimenti agli eventi che verranno narrati in questa serie.
