Here's the kind of fact you pick up watching Natural World: bears have a better sense of smell than bloodhounds. That's the joy of this series: it peppers us with intriguing details about animals' lives on the one hand and blows us away with glorious photography on the other. Tonight, it's polar bears and grizzlies, who are closely related (fact: they can mate with each other) and whose habitats increasingly overlap as the Arctic Circle warms. Linking their stories is a clever idea. Polar bears took advantage of an evolutionary niche born out of the last ice age. Now climate change (the real story here) is making their lives harder, just as other animals, such as grizzlies, move further north in the warm temperatures. There are amazing images: a grizzly snoring, a newborn polar bear cub (the size of a guinea pig) making a little weeping noise, and a mum and older cub caught in a storm at sea, like toys in a washing machine. It looks grim up north.
