How much love do a man and wife need to keep them together when the unthinkable happens? Ian McEwan asked this question in his 1987 Whitbread Prize-winning novel, sympathetically dramatised here for radio by Sharon Oakes. The very meaning of time itself changes for Stephen and Julie when their three-year-old daughter is abducted in broad daylight from a supermarket - blind panic, aching loss and childhood memories all distort what's perceived as "normal" time. This is a harrowing, insightful drama, but a terribly upsetting listen.
