The free-spirited Hungarian Annie Fischer (1914-1995) was one of the 20th century's greatest pianists. She was too mercurial an artist to enjoy making records, and after her husband died in 1968, she grew increasingly reclusive, avoiding studio microphones altogether. That makes this BBC Legends transfer of her 1961 Edinburgh recital particularly precious--not least because it contains music by Brahms and her countrymen, Bartók, Liszt, and Dohnányi, that she never recorded commercially. She lets the diffuse, sprawling score of Brahms's mighty F Minor Sonata unfold simply and majestically: her chords roll with an oceanic roar. And while an occasional note goes awry--Fischer was always more interested in getting the music, rather than merely the notes, right--not a single inflection goes wrong. Pianists who play this piece with a comparably consummate sense of pace, atmosphere, and emotional power can be counted on the fingers of one hand. That might also be said about the disc's other performances. Her earthy and passionate reading of Bartók's 15 Hungarian Peasant Songs is a far cry from the hard-edged approach usually encountered. Two Liszt Etudes are dispatched with panache and uncommon musicality. Her playing in Dohnányi's Rhapsody in C Major is as pleasing to the ear as a delicious Viennese pastry would be to the palate.

Of Annie Fischer’s pianism, the word vibrant comes to mind. Note-spills count for nothing when she presses the ignition switch. That she thought deeply about the music she played is self-evident; her re-creative fire seems of the moment, when poetry and declamation meld. Her Brahms sonata is dramatic, the slow movement inward and smouldering. The Bartok returns her to native soil, Hungarian plains conjured, souls of composer, artist and compatriots bared, inflections and emphases, the ’swing’ of numbers 9 and 10 innate. Liszt and Dohnanyi, fellow Nationals, are at one remove here in these salon pieces: Un sospiro is emotionally aflame, the study after Paganini dazzling, Dohnanyi’s febrile and gloriously expansive Rhapsody played without inhibition.

"...She [Annie Fischer] was as profound, exciting and wide-ranging interpreter as any, and she was no mean virtuoso either (witness her stunning Liszt-playing here)...I would unhesitatingly rank her with the highest. In its truly symphonic breadth, its gigantic power and its almost painful intimacy, her playing of the Brahms F minor Sonata here is usurpassed in my experience." -Siepmann, BBC

It brings me great pleasure to bring you this real gem.

From the opening chords of the Brahms until the last notes of the Liszt you'll be on the edge of your seat. Sure, there are mistakes, but what excitement, what majesty - this is piano playing!

I've been trying to put my finger on the imagery it conjures up, and, craving your indulgence it's this ... imagine a dark night, the wind is howling, you drive to a deserted mansion and timidly enter through the open door - there, in the middle of a cathedral-like hall lit only by candles, consumed by the music, the mad professor is playing. Yes, it reminds me of Bach's D Minor Toccata and Fugue.

This one easily makes it onto my desert island.
