The TV series was made in the 1980s, and was filmed in Ireland at locations in Kildare and Wicklow with additional locations in the West of Ireland in a co-production between Ulster Television and Radio Telefís Éireann. It was broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK and RTÉ One in the Republic of Ireland.

The various stories concern the life of an Irish ex-British Army officer Resident Magistrate (R.M.) recently appointed to his position in Ireland, which at that stage was still wholly a part of the United Kingdom, and before the creation of the present day Republic of Ireland.

Series One, Episode Four - The Boat's Share (1983)

Major Yeates' pompous and self-opinionated cousin comes to town. Though Basil is only there for a sampling of local customs, his visit causes trouble for the Resident Magistrate.

Flurry suggests Basil might learn some interesting Irish language during the forthcoming case of assault between two families, so they go to court. After four hours of graphic and contradictory evidence about the events on the island where the families live, Major Yeates resolves the case.

However, it is the Major who causes the downfall of the settlement, and only Flurry's ingenuity can put him back on the right side of the law.

Basil Leigh-Kelway: Exactly how old is that poem? A hundred years? Two? Older?

javascript:void(0); I never thought to ask. But, 'tis older than meself.
