Im Mai 1980 oeffnete Fidel Castro den Hafen von Mariel in Kuba, um kubanische und amerikanische Familienangehoerige wieder zusammenzubringen. Doch er zwang die Bootsbesitzer, die nach Amerika fuhren, Kleinkriminelle und Verbrecher mitzunehmen. Von 125.000 Einwanderern waren ueber 25.000 vorbestraft.
Unter ihnen befindet sich auch Antonio (im Original: Hardy Omar Tony Montana) Montana, ein verarmter Ex-Straefling, der in Amerika sein Glueck versuchen moechte. Nach einem hitzigen Gespraech mit den Grenzbeamten wird er in eine Art Sammel-Lager, die sog. Freedom Town gebracht. Nachdem er fuer einen noch anonymen Gangster dort einen ehemaligen hochrangigen Kommunisten waehrend eines Aufstandes getoetet hat, werden er und einige seiner Freunde mit einer Greencard entlassen.
Er und Manny Ray arbeiten zunaechst als Tellerwaescher, bekommen aber schlieszlich die Moeglichkeit, im Drogenmilieu mitzumischen.
