On the eve of the Civil War, the family happy Macahan lives at his farm in Virginia: Timothy Macahan, his wife Kate, four children Luke, the largest, the beautiful Lara, the young Josh and Jessie the adolescent. Alla vigilia della Guerra di Secessione, la famiglia Macahan vive felice nella sua fattoria in Virginia: Timothy Macahan, sua moglie Kate, i quattro figli il più grande Luke, la bella Lara, il giovane Josh e l'adolescente Jessie. A riunire la famiglia con i nonni Macahan ci pensano i festeggiamenti di ben tornato per Zebulon "Zeb" Macahan, cacciatore, scout dell'esercito e avventuriero del West. Purtroppo il paese è in fermento e la famiglia, per evitare di farsi coinvolgere dalla guerra decide, con l'aiuto di Zeb, di andare a Ovest per rifarsi una vita in pace. La famiglia riesce a partire ma, lungo la strada, si scopre che proprio in Virginia ci sono violenti scontri tra nordisti e confederati e Timothy, preoccupato per i nonni che non hanno voluto lasciare la loro vecchia casa, decide di tornare indietro per portarli via. Kate decide di fermarsi, per aspettare il ritorno del marito, ma, visto il trascorrere infruttuoso del tempo, anche Luke parte per la Virginia alla ricerca del padre. Qui viene arruolato dai nordisti con la forza e combatte nelle storica battaglia di Shiloh, sino a quando si trova ferito in un accampamento, accanto a un uomo morente: suo padre. Disgustato dalla guerra, diserta, ruba un cavallo sparando a uno sceriffo e fugge verso il resto della famiglia Macahan. I Macahan si troveranno coinvolti nell'epopea della corsa all'Ovest, immersi nei conflitti con gli indiani e con la natura a volte ostile, tanto che anche Kate morrà e arriverà sua sorella Molly (giovane vedova) a aiutare i nipoti. In sostanza la storia di questa famiglia di pionieri nel West di fine '800.
