Im Jahre 1942 bringen flüchtende jüdische Intellektuelle ihren Sohn bei einer katholischen Bauernfamilie unter, wo er getarnt als Familienmitglied Invasion und Verfolgung überstehen soll. Auf dem Land wird der Knabe Zeuge vom Wüten der Nazis unter der Zivilbevölkerung, erlebt aber auch schöne Stunden an der Seite seiner neuen Geschwister und unter der Obhut des einfühlsamen Dorfpriesters. Als der Pflegevater stirbt und lokale Kollaborateure von seiner wahren Identität erfahren, spitzt sich die Situation zu.
