420 vor Christus ist das römische Reich im Aufruhr und zieht in den Krieg, um sich zu vergrern. In diesen düsteren und blutigen Zeiten wird auf mysteriöse, gar dämonische Weise ein Junge geboren. Sein Schicksal ist schon jetzt besiegelt, er wird einst der berüchtigte Zauberer Merlin sein, aber er wird auch große Qualen erleiden müssen. Ein Magier weist ihn und ein anderes Waisenkind namens Vendiger in die Künste der Magie ein, doch Vendiger nutzt seine Kräfte, um die Saxon Armee zu kontrollieren und das Land ins Verderben zu stürzen. Merlin, der seine Kräfte noch nicht unter Kontrolle hat, muss das berüchtigte Schwert Excalibur finden und eine eigene Armee gegen Vendiger in den Kampf führen.
