La serie stata trasmessa per la prima volta dal network giapponese Tokyo 12 a partire da aprile 1981 e in Italia da Canale 5 nel 1982.








Durante la Guerra Civile Americana le quattro sorelle Beth, Meg, Amy e Jo rimangono sole con la madre dopo che il padre, nellesercito, parte per il fronte e cercano di darsi una mano per sostenere la famiglia, ora che si sono trasferite in una cittadina per allontanarsi dai campi di battaglia. Qui incontreranno Laurie, il nipote del loro ricco vicino di casa (che possiede un meravigliosos pianoforte, la passione di Beth), che dimostra una particolare attenzione nei confronti di Jo. Vedremo scorrere la vita quotidiana della famiglia tra momenti drammatici e sereni che faranno maturare le ragazze rendendole pi responsabili e abbastanza forti da fronteggiare la vita di sacrifici che le aspetta.
