Im 9. Jahrhundert fallen die Wikinger in Nordamerika ein, rauben, plündern und brandschatzen. Nach einer Schlacht der Aggressoren treibt das Clanschiff vor der Ostküste. Indianer finden einen kleinen Normannen, der als einziger in den eisigen Fluten überlebt hat. Sie taufen ihn Ghost (Karl Urban) und ziehen ihn groß, obwohl seine Angehörigen sie beinahe ausgelöscht hätten. Als Ghost 25 Jahre alt wird, kehren die Wikinger zurück und überfallen das Dorf erneut. Ghost beginnt einen persönlichen Feldzug gegen seine barbarischen Blutsverwandten, um das Morden zu stoppen.
