Kaum hat ein junges Paar (Patrick Wilson und Kerry Washington) sein kalifornisches Traumhaus bezogen, gerät es ins Visier ihres engstirnigen Nachbarn: Der leicht erregbare Polizist (Samuel L. Jackson), ein strenger, alleinerziehender Vater, hat sich selbst zum Aufpasser der Gemeinde ernannt und missbilligt Liebesbeziehungen zwischen verschiedenen Rassen zutiefst. Seine nächtlichen Patrouillen und überaus wachsamen Augen stellen für die meisten Anwohner zwar eine willkommene Beruhigung dar, das frisch vermählte Paar jedoch fühlt sich von ihm zunehmend schikaniert. Als die beiden beschließen, sich gegen den aufdringlichen Nachbarn und sein ständiges Eingreifen in ihre Privatsphäre zu wehren, hat das tragische Konsequenzen.
