Een leraar, John Koestler (Nicolas Cage), opent een tijdcapsule op de basisschool waar ook zijn zoon Caleb zijn lessen volgt. Vijftig jaar eerder is de capsule gevuld door leerlingen tijdens een oprichtingsceremonie van de school. Bij het onderzoek naar de cryptische boodschappen die zich in de capsule bevinden doet hij een verbazingwekkende ontdekking: de boodschappen voorspellen met zeer grote precisie de data, aantal slachtoffers en geografische coördinaten van iedere grote ramp van de afgelopen 50 jaar. Andere voorspellingen die in de documenten staan moeten nog plaats vinden. Eén daarvan voorspelt een algehele vernietiging van de aarde op zeer korte termijn. John doet er vervolgens alles aan om de autoriteiten voor het komende drama te waarschuwen, maar tevergeefs. John zelf moet nu alles op alles zetten om de dreigende catastrofe af te wenden.
