The pilot episode established Duncan as a simple man living quietly with his girlfriend Tessa Noël (played by Alexandra Vandernoot). They were co-proprietors of the antique shop MacLeod & Noël Antiques. The pilot introduced Richie Ryan (Stan Kirsch) as a thief who entered Duncan's shop and witnessed the confrontation between Duncan, evil Immortal Slan Quince (Richard Moll) and Duncan's fellow clansman Connor MacLeod, the hero from the movies.


It was established that Duncan had lived nearly 400 years, and that there were many such Immortals in the world. Connor had come to Duncan to ask him to return to The Game and help good win over evil, where "The Game" is the term used by the Immortals to describe their hunting of one another, seeking "Quickenings" by beheading their opponents. Duncan had hidden from other Immortals for some time, removing himself from The Game. Hunted by Quince, Duncan had no choice but face him and by the end of the first episode, Slan had been defeated and Duncan was clearly caught up in The Game again.

Il primo episodio ci presenta Duncan che vive pacifico assieme alla sua ragazza: Tessa Noel (interpretata da Alexandra Vandernoot). È proprietario di un negozio di antiquariato e Tessa è una scultrice. Viene introdotto anche un altro dei personaggi fondamentali, che in seguito diverrà amico e fedele compagno di Duncan MacLeod: Richie Ryan (Stan Kirsch) un giovane ragazzo che viene sorpreso a rubare nel negozio di antiquariato. In questo episodio Pilota il ruolo di antagonista è interpretato da Slan Quince (Richard Moll), che è mosso da un’antichissima rivalità verso Connor, il compagno di clan, nonché mentore e maestro di Duncan. (Christopher Lambert, riprende il ruolo assunto nel film). Durante questo episodio scopriamo i primi particolari relativi alla vita di Duncan, nato nelle Highlands della Scozia quattrocento anni fa. Non è l’unico immortale, come lui ce ne sono molti altri, spesso malvagi. Tutti sono spinti dall’eterna lotta per la sopravvivenza in un gioco che non conosce limiti di tempo e spazio. La reminiscenza è cio che spesso li spinge ad uccidersi tra di loro. Quando un immortale ne uccide un altro tramite decapitazione, ne assorbe la forza, il potere e la conoscenza: questa è la "reminiscenza". Duncan era rimasto fuori dal “Gioco” (il termine usato dagli immortali per designare la loro eterna lotta) ma la sfida lanciatagli da Slan Quince non gli lascia possibilità: è di nuovo costretto a riprendere la spada.
