Two marvelously funny radio plays exploring the effects of the Industrial Revolution on the Welsh people, the morality (or otherwise) of the capitalist system, Celtic legends & the tradition of oral history and a metaphysical meditation on the very nature of time itself. As if all this were not enough there are shades of The Twilight Zone too.



Dialogue which sparkles make these two plays worthy of repeated listening. A personal favourite of mine and, IMHO the best radio plays I've ever uploaded here. Highly recommended.

Only a Matter of Time

Set in the 1840's, Wales is on the brink of the Industrial Revolution but not yet ready to embrace the impact of time standardisation with the arrival of Brunel's railway from London. An Englishman named Fanshawe arrives and comes across local man, Meredith. They exchange views on the pros and cons of human progress. Starring James Bolam and Alan David. Directed by Alison Hindell. First broadcast on 4th February 1999.



Time Added on for Injuries

In the sequel to Only a Matter of Time, descendants of Fanshawe & Meredith meet on a train and uncover the story that linked their families 160 years ago. On a mission from Whitehall, Mr Fanshawe travels to Wales to explore the history of Dic Penderyn. After a chance meeting, he spends the afternoon with a Welshman and nationalist and they compare different versions of the same events. This also stars James Bolam and Alan David. Directed by Alison Hindell. First broadcast on 2nd November 2000.
