┼ret är 1997 och brottsligheten i USA har stigit sÃ¥ mycket att ön Manhattan i staden New York har omvandlats till ett enda stort fängelse och de som skickas in dit fÃ¥r aldrig komma tillbaka. Filmen tar sin början med att en terrorist störtar Air Force One med USA:s president (Donald Pleasence) ombord pÃ¥ just Manhattan. Presidenten tillfÃ¥ngatas av ett gäng som styrs av Duke (Isaac Hayes) och om polisen landar pÃ¥ ön dödas han genast. Polisen är dock under tidspress dÃ¥ presidentens närvaro krävs inom 24 timmar pÃ¥ ett fredstoppmöte mellan Kina, USA och Sovjetunionen tillsammans med ett kassettband som innehÃ¥ller viktig information om fusion. Polischefen Bob Hauk (Lee Van Cleef) ser inget annat rÃ¥d än att ge i uppdrag till den före detta elitsoldaten Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) att ta sig in och rädda presidenten. Problemet är bara att Snake numera är en fÃ¥nge som skulle ha skickats in till fängelseön sÃ¥ hans pÃ¥litlighet är inte speciellt hög.
