Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog wordt een Italiaanse man met zijn vrouw en zoontje afgevoerd naar een Duits werkkamp. Om het kind het vooruitzicht van een zekere dood te besparen, stelt hij de reis voor als een spel, waarin je prijzen kunt winnen. De man gelooft er heilig in dat hij de geestelijke gezondheid van zijn zoontje kan redden en gaat vastbesloten door met toneelspelen, zelfs wanneer ze in het kamp zijn aangekomen en keihard moeten werken.
