Film naar het gelijknamige boek van Kai Hermann en Horst Rieck, geregisseerd door Uli Edel.





De hoofdrollen in de film worden gespeeld door de destijds nog volledig onbekende acteurs Natja Brunkhorst (als Christiane) en Thomas Haustein (als haar vriendje Detlef). David Bowie speelt zichzelf en treedt in de film op met het nummer 'Station To Station'.





De film vertoond het leven van Christiane Felscherinow uit Berlijn. In 1974 kwam ze via vrienden met drugs in aanraking. De beginnende verslaving was al snel niet meer controleerbaar, zodat Christiane tenslotte op 14-jarige leeftijd op Station Berlin Zoologischer Garten de prostitutie ingaat. Haar vriendje Detlef (die ook prostitueert) helpt haar daarbij. Haar moeder hoort pas van haar verslaving als het al bijna te laat is. Als Christiane in de krant leest dat haar beste vriendin Babsi overleden is, is ze van afschuw vervuld. Op dat moment was Babsi de jongste persoon in Duitsland die aan Heroïne gestorven is.





De film is op de originele locaties gedraaid, deels met acteurs zonder ervaring. De regisseur Uli Edel kreeg ondersteuning van David Bowie, bij wie Christiane aanwezig was bij een concert in Berlijn. Er werden in de Film ook gebruik gemaakt van originele opnames van dat concert.
