Los Angeles, anni '20. Disperata per il rapimento del figlio, Christine Collins, si appella al buon cuore dei rapitori chiedendo che gli restituiscano il bambino. Dopo alcuni giorni, in effetti, la polizia le da la buona notizia del ritrovamento del figlio, ma la donna sostiene che quello non é il suo bambino. Considerata pazza, la donna viene umiliata con l'internazione in un manicomio. La verità in realtà é che suo figlio é stato ucciso e Christine si é trovata a combattere contro la corruzione della polizia, avendo contro l'opinione pubblica, sino a quando anche il bambino non arriva ad ammettere che Christine non é sua mamma.
