Dopo il brutale omicidio dei suoi genitori, Justine vive vissuto nella solitudine tipica di coloro che diventano quasi invisibili. Ma il rilascio anticipato di uno degli assassini risveglia in lei paura e dolore. Justine trova conforto e compassione in Louis Schneider, un poliziotto della Squadra Omicidi di Marsiglia, una città nella quale crimini particolarmente efferati e brutali continuano a restare misteriosamente impuniti, mettendo in cattiva luce la polizia. Schneider, un individualista incorruttibile, decide di mettersi contro i suoi superiori e apre un'inchiesta che lo condurrà alle soglie dell'inferno.
