Giappone, anno 1614, Ieyasu Tokugawa sferra una potente offensiva contro i Toyotomi a Osaka e rischia di essere ucciso dai ninja Sarutobi, al servizio della famiglia Sanada.





Ieyasu ordina quindi di sterminare tutti i Sarutobi, rimasti in pochi e indeboliti dalla guerra, al suo fidato Hattori Hanzo, il capo dei ninja di Iga, il quale si mette subito sulle loro tracce.





Daisuke Ozaru, il padre di Sasuke, ferito e travestito da mendicante, raggiunge il figlio e sua madre. Purtroppo quest'ultima, per proteggere il marito e Sasuke, muore combattendo contro Kaede, la figlia di Hattori Hanzo.





Daisuke, ancora vestito da mendicante, aiuta il figlio a scappare, poi gli si rivela e insieme intraprendono un viaggio per salvarsi dalla morte affrontando i ninja inseguitori che li braccano.





Daisuke sfrutterà ogni occasione per permettere al figlio di apprendere sia le tecniche ninja che lezioni di vita, arrivando anche a lasciarlo da solo per diversi giorni
