In 2005, after the success of Shrek and Shrek 2, Dreamworks Animation and Dreamworks SKG released another digitally animated film, but this time, the story was about four animals from the New York City Zoo who decide they want to take a vacation and escape from the Zoo, only to be recaptured and sent to Africa. Of course, there are problems in shipping, and the quartet ends up in Madagascar instead. While the story may seem a bit simple, the real glue behind this project is not the story, or even the animation, which is very good ...
The glue holding this film together into a great animated film is the voice talent behind these characters! Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, and Jada Pinkett Smith hold down the four major roles while Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer, and Andy Richter fill out the other three mid-major roles. With such an all-star cast of comedic talent, the characters come to life and the story comes with it.
In 2008, the sequel was released, following those characters as they try to fly a rebuilt plane off the island of Madagascar, only to crash land in Africa. In this second film, Bernie Mac and Alec Baldwin joined the cast, making the film even better and funnier.
If you've never seen either of these films, this is a great opportunity to download them. Also, just for kicks, I've included the short film which came with the DVD of Madagascar entitled The Madagascar Penguins in "A Christmas Caper" which stars the Penguins of Madagascar and Ted the Polar Bear. However after being mistaken for a toy and being bought by an elderly lady, the three other penguins must save him from the evil wrath of the lady's small dog, who appears cute and cuddly on the outside, yet is evil, with menacing eyes and dagger-like teeth on the inside.
