Im Land Izmer herrscht die Kaiserin Savina (Thora Birch). Die führende Gesellschaftsschicht sind die Magier, die das gemeine Volk unterdrücken. Aus Angst, Kaiserin Savina könnte diese Struktur umstürzen, versucht der böse Magier Profion (Jeremy Irons) die roten Drachen unter seine Kontrolle zu bekommen und damit auch die Macht zu erlangen. Dazu braucht er jedoch ein magisches Szepter, hinter dem auch eine Gruppe von Abenteurern her ist. Die beiden Diebe Ridley (Justin Whalin) und Snails (Marlon Wayans) freunden sich mit Elwood dem Zwerg (Lee Arenberg), der Elfin Norda (Kristen Wilson) und der Magierin Marina (Zoe McLellan) an und müssen zahlreiche Prüfungen bestehen, um das Land vor der Bedrohung zu retten.
