The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center commissioned me to compose a piece of chamber music for 


the New World Festival held in Miami on June 13,1982. Fred Sherry, who has been associated with the 


Society for some time, originally proposed the idea to them. The result was the Septet


There was a subsequent set of performances in New York the following January 9th, 1983, ending with 


a PBS "Live from Lincoln Center" broadcast. Finally, in September/October 1984 I reformed the group 


for a concert tour of the United States at the end of which this recording was made.


Writing the Septet was my first venture as a composer into creating a through-written piece of this 


length and complexity. I must say I had great fun doing it. I began with no idea of form but only the 


idea that I would improvise the form as I wrote. I just kept writing until I ran out of time and then 


composed an ending. The rhythmic interdependency of each part is what creates the technical challenge 


of playing this piece. Ida, from the first violin position, and Fred, from the cello position, carve 


the guidelines of performance.


The Temple of Isfahan (originally titled Isfahan) is a reworking of a piece that I composed for 


Al DiMeola as a guitar soloist with string quartet and piano. In the present version, the French horn 


and the flute divide what was the guitar solo part.
