Los Angeles, 1928: Op een ochtend, terwijl Christine is gaan werken, verdwijnt haar zoontje Walter uit het huis. Een vruchteloze zoektocht volgt en maanden later brengt men het 9-jarig jongetje terug naar de stad. Overweldigd door de politie, de pers en haar gemengde emoties laat ze de jongen bij haar overnachten. Maar diep in haar hart weet ze dat de jongen haar zoontje niet is. Christine spoort de autoriteiten aan om verder te blijven zoeken maar al vlug ontdekt ze dat ze als vrouw niet veel te zeggen heeft en al zeker niet het systeem in vraag mag stellen. Gelukkig vindt ze in al vlug een bondgenoot die haar helpt in haar zoektocht. Gebaseerd op een waargebeurd verhaal dat Californië op z'n grondvesten deed daveren.
