North Korea - Parallel Universe
Reporter: Stephen McDonell

When Correspondent Stephen McDonell received an invitation to go on an official tour of North Korea he jumped at the chance. The country was opening its doors briefly for the Arirang Mass Gymnastics Festival, the annual propaganda spectacular where a hundred thousand performers celebrate the exploits of the Great Leader Kim Il Sung, and the Dear Leader Kim Jong Il.

Accompanied at all times by four government minders the team was bussed from one attraction to the other – Kim Il Sung’s birthplace, the Russian built subway with its ornate chandeliers and mosaic pictures and the International Friendship Museum, a museum dedicated to the gifts given to the Great Leader and Dear Leader. The museum’s donors include tyrants, sports stars, religious figures, corporate bosses and Australia’s Whitlam Government.

But it’s the conversations along the way that provide insight into the country and the lives of the people.

The team’s main guide, Mr Kim Hyon Chol, tells of the hard times his family endured during the great famine in the late 90s and how life has improved since then.

“Now we have everyday there are two to three hours of water... and electricity, we have enough electricity for TV, computer, refrigerator,” he says.

Mr Kim becomes extremely angry when a member of our tour group suggests that North Korea started the Korean War.

“I can’t stand it. Frankly speaking I can’t stand that. If you say that any more I can’t secure your life in this land.”

At the Demilitarised Zone with South Korea, Stephen McDonell asks North Korean army's Captain Han, about his country's recent agreement as part of the Six Party Talks to give up nuclear weapons? he says.

“We didn’t mean to announce to give up nuclear weapons... to freeze the Yongbyon nuclear power station does not mean we’ll give up nuclear weapons.”

McDonell also meets Swiss businessman Felix Abt, who has a joint venture pharmaceutical company in Pyongyang. He says the communist dictatorship is “… open to foreign investment and business… because development of the economy is a high priority.”

Leading Lebanon - An Interview with Prime Minister Fouad Siniora
Reporter: David Hardaker

David Hardaker’s interview with Prime Minister Siniora looks at the challenges facing the Lebanese government.

The most awkward, currently, is the Lebanese Army’s failure to oust heavily armed guerrillas calling themselves Fatah al Islam from a Palestinian refugee camp in the north of Lebanon, Nahr El Bared.

Mr Siniora says many of the fighters are neither Lebanese, nor Palestinians.

He blames Syrian intelligence for guiding and funding the rebel group and he acknowledges that a significant quantity of weapons and ammunition have been smuggled across the Syrian/Lebanese border in past months.

The Prime Minister also acknowledges that his determination that a United Nations tribunal should investigate the assassination of Prime Minister Hariri is a big factor in the current tense relationships between Lebanon and Syria.

But he insists he will not back down. "I have been Prime Minister for about 22 months now. I am soft with my words, but very firm in my positions," he tells Hardaker.

The interview with Prime Minister Siniora was recorded just before the murder of the government MP Walid Eido.
