Mazinga Z è un anime creato dall'autore Go Nagai nel 1972 insieme all'analogo manga, che a differenza della serie animata incontrò scarso successo. Una seconda versione del manga, meglio curata e diretta a un pubblico più maturo, fu poi realizzata da Gosaku Ota. In Italia venne trasmesso per la prima volta nel 1980 da RAI 1 (all'epoca Rete 1).La serie animata si compone di 92 episodi (in Italia ne furono doppiati e trasmessi solo 51)
