Gare automobilistiche tra detenuti in un carcere. Situazione improbabile, è vero, ma siamo nel futuro (2012, non troppo lontano), ci sono ragioni di business (con la tv via cavo l’istituto penitenziario vende la diretta e ci guadagna su) e, soprattutto, il tutto ci viene detto da quattro righe di spiegazione all’inizio, senza troppi fronzoli o perdite di tempo. Chi vuole ci crede e si immerge nella storia, gli altri potranno pure obiettare sull’assurdità del tutto, ma ormai ci sarà poco da fare, la storia è quella. Death race è un film di puro intrattenimento che va preso per quello che è: incredibili corse in macchina in cui per vincere si può superare, o uccidere, l’avversario. Lo spargimento di sangue è ben visto, fa salire l’audience.

Ottima confezione, montaggio adrenalinico, belle ragazze (Natalie Martinez ruba letteralmente l’occhio) e una storia che si basa su una delle dinamiche narrative più vista, ma comunque sempre efficace, al cinema: il prigioniero ingiustamente condannato che cerca di evadere e farla pagare a chi l’ha incastrato.
