Welcome back to the world of Rick Spleen, a world of stripped floors and tasteful prints, under the surface of which boils a pit of bitterness. Secondrate comedian Rick is a man whose expression is forever knotted in distaste and who can curdle any social situation with a tactless word. Ah, it's good to have him back. In the second series of Jack Dee's sitcom, it felt as if the scripts were cruising, playing to a formula (Rick does something wildly inept and disaster ensues). This opener to series three is a return to form, and with a couple of new twists: desperate Michael (Tony Gardner) has upgraded his cafÃ© to a restaurant, which adds a dash of Fawlty Towers to the mix, while sullen East European home-help Magda (Anna Crilly) has to move in with Rick and his wife Mel but is still, of course, "wery unhairpy". To fans of the show, Magda is a minor comedy goddess. Tonight she puts her favourite sausages ("from my country . . . made with special meat and blood") in Rick's fridge - and the fun begins.
