Beschreibung:

Hellboy ist ein Dämon, den die Nazis im Jahre 1944 mit Unterstützung der Thule-Gesellschaft und Grigori Rasputin, einem nicht totzukriegenden Berater des letzten russischen Zaren, durch Öffnung eines Dimensionsportals heraufbeschworen hatten, um den Krieg mit Hilfe überirdischer Mächte zu gewinnen. Die Alliierten, unter ihnen Professor Trevor Broom Bruttenholm, unterbrachen jedoch die Zeremonie und fanden einen kleinen, roten Dämonen, den sie Hellboy nannten. Danach nahm Bruttenholm Hellboy unter seine Fittiche.



Etwa 60 Jahre später ist Hellboy immer noch nicht ganz erwachsen, dafür zu einem riesengroßen und unkontrollierbaren Dämon geworden, der für die Behörde Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (einer Unterabteilung des FBI) auf Dämonenjagd geht. Er verfügt über große Kraft und Beweglichkeit und ist mit einem Revolver bewaffnet, der Weihwasserkugeln verschießt. Hellboy hat aber auch viele menschliche Eigenschaften: er raucht Zigarren, isst gerne Schokolade, Nachos und kümmert sich um kleine Kätzchen.



Schließlich wird Rasputin von seinen Gehilfen wiederbelebt und plant, mit Hellboys Hilfe die Apokalypse herbeizuführen. Er tötet Hellboys Ziehvater Bruttenholm und lockt den Dämon zusammen mit seinen Mitstreitern  dem Fischwesen Abe, der Feuer erschaffenden Liz und dem jungen FBI-Agenten John  nach Russland.



Rasputin provoziert Hellboy, unter anderem dadurch, dass er Liz, in die der Dämon verliebt ist, die Seele raubt. Um sie dennoch zu retten, beginnt Hellboy das Tor zur Höllendimension zu öffnen. Doch John gelingt es im letzten Moment, Hellboy zu besänftigen. John erinnert den Dämon daran, dass dieser selbst Herr seines Schicksals ist und kein Dämon sein muss. Hellboy entscheidet sich für die Menschheit und vernichtet Rasputin. Danach gelingt es Hellboy, auch Liz wiederzubeleben und die beiden werden ein Paar.
