In einer fernen Zukunft haben die Menschen die Erde verlassen, da diese durch Umweltverschmutzung unbewohnbar wurde. Ein Heer von Müllrobotern des Typs WALL-E wurde zurückgelassen, um aufzuräumen. Im Jahre 2815, nach 700 Jahren des Müllsammelns und der Müllverarbeitung ist der Protagonist WALL-E der einzig Übriggebliebene. Der Roboter hat über die Jahrhunderte eine Evolution durchlaufen und ein eigenes Bewusstsein entwickelt; dies geht so weit, dass er Ersatzteile für sich selbst sucht. Somit ist er das einzige hochentwickelte Lebewesen auf der Erde. Sein einziger Freund ist eine Kakerlake. Von einer Kopie des Filmes Hello, Dolly! lernt er, dass es die Bestimmung aller hochentwickelten Lebewesen ist, sich zu verlieben.
