BE AWARE IF YOU INSTALL THIS ON YOUR CONSOLE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO ON XBOX LIVE UNTIL NOVEMBER 19TH.
This will not brick your console if it is modded and YES you can copy backups to the hard drive.
Ive done research on this and I also have it on my firmware flashed sammy xbox and everything works.
Copy the $systemupdate folder to the root directory of a USB thumbdrive or to a CD-R to install the update.
Avatars are not included in this which is why the file size is so small.
