Ben Carson (Kiefer Sutherland) hat seine Mitschuld am Tod eines Kollegen nicht verkraftet und deshalb den Dienst als Undercover-Polizist quittiert. Um seine mit ihm zerstrittene Frau (Paula Patton) und die Kinder zu versorgen, nimmt er den Job als Nachtwächter in einem heruntergekommenen New Yorker Kaufhaus an.
