Allontanatosi dal cattolicesimo dopo l’incontro in carcere con un comunista, Aldo Cervi, contadino del reggiano, sollecita i suoi fratelli all’impegno antifascista, così come all’introduzione di importanti innovazioni nella conduzione dei lavori agricoli. Determinante è anche l’incontro con la prima attrice di un teatrino viaggiante, attiva nel movimento antifascista clandestino. Mentre i genitori ospitano in casa degli ex prigionieri alleati, braccati dai tedeschi, Aldo sale in montagna dove si sono costituiti i primi nuclei della Resistenza armata al nazifascismo. Quando torna temporaneamente a casa, questa, il 25 novembre del ’43, viene circondata dai fascisti. I fratelli e il padre vengono arrestati. Un piano di fuga non viene realizzato e, il 28 dicembre 1943, i sette fratelli sono fucilati dai repubblichini al Poligono di tiro di Reggio Emilia.
