Pendant deux ans, Errol Morris a enquêté pour découvrir ce qui s'est vraiment passé là-bas durant l'automne 2003. Grâce aux photos prises par les soldats, aux témoignages de plusieurs spécialistes et de personnes parfois directement impliquées dans cette affaire, Errol Morris a reconstitué la chronologie des faits et étudié le contexte qui a conduit à ces extrémités. Interview après interview, photo après photo, l'affaire des tortures d'Abu Ghraib prend une dimension bien plus vaste et beaucoup plus dérangeante que celle brossée par les médias. Même si les soldats pris en photo en train d'humilier et de torturer les prisonniers iraquiens ont été condamnés, étaient-ils les seuls coupables ? Pourquoi aucun gradé n'a-t-il jamais été mis en cause ? Qui est vraiment responsable ?
